Stone walled transformation

1970's meets a new era

Our home was built in the 70's and we knew coming in that it was going to take years of tender love and care for the house to be what we dreamed of it becoming. The family room featured a fireplace which simply put, was a hole in the wall with a grate.

The stones captivated my interest when we first purchased the home, but over time that interest diminished as new ideas started to float around in my mind. I imagined a built-in bookcase surrounding the fireplace, covering the stones with sheetrock, or covering the stones with tiles.

The last thing that came to my mind was preserving the stones by allowing them to serve as the texture beneath a newly textured wall.

I have always loved the look of mediterranean stucco walls and it dawned on me that I could achieve that look by getting creative. My idea turned into a plan, and eventually the transformation took place.

How was a diyer going to tackle this wall?

I am notorious for coming up with BIG ideas that seem easy for me--until I start and realize they are usually not as easy as I thought. I call it the "it's easy" syndrome-- a bit of delusion. I somehow seem to trick myself into projects that end of proving they could definitely be done, but had I realized how difficult and time consuming they were, they probably would have never been completed.

My estimated time for completion was 2-3 days. I. Was. Wrong. It was more like 2-3 weeks-- working every single day after coming home from work. I was laughing at myself every single day. I was also scheduling massage appointments every Saturday morning. I also lost 5 pounds.
